A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
