Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
