The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
